Wine in Eden

There will be a Food, Cheese and Wine festival from the 29th of March and the 1st of April 2012 at the DF Malherbe School grounds in Walmer Park, Port Elizabeth. Celebrity chefs will be holding demonstrations and exhibitors include traditional to contemporary foods with a world of exotic flavours from India, Thailand, Germany and  Austrian to mention a few.  South African wines from the top wine farms in our country will be represented with wine and whisky tasting paired with popular cheese. There will be the ineviable  “Potjiekos” competition and a traditional Sunday lunch “Spitbraai” with a Kids Zone and festival playground.

Newstead Estate in the Crags is  expecting their first harvest early in 2012 and will be offering wine tasting and platters amongst the vines. They are producing MCC sparkling and still wines fromestate Chardonay, Sav Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes.

Hartenbos hosts the Hartenbos Wine Festival offering wine tasters the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the  wines from wineries on Klein Karoo wine route. It follows the Cape Route 62 from Montagu in the west to the Langkloof in the east and its is one of the most interesting and diverse wine producing areas in South Africa.

Vineyards of fertile alluvial soil  can be found along the river lines on the high slopes of a valley between imposing mountain ranges. The Klein Karoo has a drier climate with healthy and predominently organically cultivated vineyards.

Winemakers in the region take full advantage of different micro-climates that result in a diverse range of quality wines.  these include world beating Port and South Africa’s premier Muscadel as well as both red and white wines, varying from full-bodied cabernets to lighter easier wines and pot-stilled brandies.

North of the Outeniqua mountains on the Garden Route you can find the Langkloof wine region where succulent grapes are grown and wine is made.  Not on the same scale as in the the Cape winelands. But this is what makes the Langkloof wine  all the more unique

Schoonberg, one of  Morné Jonker’s family farms in the Klein Karoo can be found in the Langkloof valley near Uniondale. Four hundred and sixty hectares with a north-facing slope at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains and the Duiwelskop peak which is commonly covered by cloud on the balmy summer days.   Water vapour is carried is carried up into the atmosphere from the sea forming the clouds which suddenly appear as if from nowhere.  They then spill over and into the valleys on the inland side of the mountain bringing the cool moisture needed to complement the soils and completing the setting for the vineyards at Schoonberg

With Spring arriving, the Valley continues to produce the freshest supply of local produce, like jams, freshly-squeezed apple juice and Ross Gower’s superlative bubbly. Barry Gould has added homemade olive oil to his collection of his very own fine wines, which include a wooded Chenin and “A Simple Red” blend.

The family share a growing excitement about Wildekrans’s 200th birthday in a year or two. What is now a four-star-graded guest house began as a simple travelers’ inn in the early 1800s. A definite day for the diary.
